Ethically mined Emeralds – Fabergé

There is much conversation in the jewellery world about ethically-mined diamonds, with the 2006 movie Blood Diamond providing a powerful catalyst for a more public debate. Some consumers of diamonds now feel compelled to ensure that the diamonds they buy can be guaranteed to be non-conflict. At PIKE, we choose to buy our diamonds from suppliers who can give us this guarantee.

Did you know that this is also an issue for the mining of emeralds? Read here about the two mines where emeralds are being ethically mined, taking into consideration the local community’s people and the environment.

One of the most beautiful pieces of jewellery to be created using only ethically-mined emeralds, and diamonds, is the breathtaking necklace created by the House of Fabergé in collaboration with the world’s leading producer of ethically-sourced rare gemstones, Gemfields.

The necklace was created ‘to draw attention to ethical mining and fair trade practices in the gemstone and jewelry industry’ (http://www.gemstone.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=465:faberge-and-gemfields-create-fair-trade-collar).

The stunning necklace is made up of 79 emeralds totalling 186.85 carats and features ‘sugar-loaf’ cabochons, and a pear-shaped drop at the base of the necklace that weighs 30.65 carats. One of the most unique things about the necklace? It is made up of three discrete pieces that can we worn individually, or together in different combinations.
