Diamonds reinvented

The original rings and diamonds.

The commission of the remodelling of this ring involved turning three rings into one. There were 5 larger sized diamonds from one ring, and them a number of smaller stones from the 2 rings that were worn either side. Nicholas designed a lovely yellow gold ring that used all of the stones:

The first step was for Matthew to melt yellow gold in the crucible, and then to roll it out to the right length and thickness for the initial blank ring:

Next, the annealing process. Annealing the yellow gold helps to stop it from becoming too hard or cracking during the making process, including bending the gold into a ring shape:

This design features the look of soft bezels around each diamond – to create the look Matthew started with a straight edged ring blank, then mapped the design out mathematically to make sure that all of the diamonds would fit, and that the ring ended up being the right finger size:

He then drilled out the holes for all of the diamonds, and using a hand saw, cut out the beginning of the scallop shapes:

The final manufacturing step involved carefully and meticulously hand filing the scallops into the band, before the diamonds were set into the ring:

Once the diamonds were set, Matthew hand polished and then machine polished the ring:
